The Junior Varsity (JV) volleyball team, led by head coach Kelsey Young, rose to the challenge in Thursday night’s game against the Glenvar Highlanders in a 2-up, 2-down faceoff at Clifton Academy. Meanwhile the Varsity Cougars, who played directly after, showed no mercy as they, too, defeated the Highlanders.

The JV game started off promptly at 5:30 p.m. with the Alleghany Cougars taking an early lead. Throughout the first set, the score remained close, with the Cougars keeping pace with the Highlanders and hanging on to the lead. Though there were a few calls that led to challenges for the referees, the game continued, with the Cougars taking down the Highlanders.

The second set wasn’t much different. It kept fans on the edge of their seats as the JV Lady Cougars once again got off to a slight, but early lead. They took to the court to challenge Glenvar, almost daring them, to take away their undefeated title. The Highlanders would fall short as the JV Cougars leapt ahead and spiked their way to victory!

The Varsity game wouldn’t be much different, though it would require a more hard-fought battle, typical for Varsity in any sport, as rules and regulations tend to be a bit more challenging. For JV, the girls are required to win 2 sets to win the game. As such, the game could be over in as few as 2 sets or as many as 3. For Varsity, 3 set wins are required to clench the victory. Therefore, the match could be over in as few as 2 sets, or as many as 5. In Thursday night’s game, they would play 4 sets and defeat Glenvar with a score of 3-1, securing Varsity’s impressive record this season of 13-3.

Since the beginning of the season, the JV Lady Cougars have been an unstoppable force on the court. Now sitting at an impressive 16-0 unblemished record, it is hard to say if anything can get in the way of these student athletes from finishing the season unshaken. I tend to think not. Meanwhile, the Varsity record is equally impressive under the guidance of Coach Charles Leitch. The season is far from over and we look forward to seeing what the JV and Varsity teams have in store for fans in the future!

Up next for the Alleghany Cougars volleyball teams will be a home game tonight against the Floyd County Buffalos at Clifton Academy, with the JV team starting things off at 5:30 p.m. and Varsity following at 7:00 p.m.
