Another Sharon Ruritan donation was made to the Alleghany County Weekday Religious Education (WRE) Program and was presented to Rev. Virgil Woody, minister of Sharon Baptist Church. The WRE Program with three teachers reaches 400 students, second through fourth grades, with a weekly Bible lesson.
Becky Rhea, a former teacher, is presently in charge of WRE, with Virgil Woody and others filling in as substitutes when needed. With an annual budget of $47,000, of which $3,000 covers taxes and teacher pay, groups and individuals from numerous area churches donate to keep the program running. Two of the three teachers are also bus drivers and are paid for their work, even though some donate their pay back into the program.
One outstanding cost for WRE presently is the exorbitant cost of fuel for the one bus and two vans used to transport students to class and back to school. Students in Covington are transported to the Brethren Church, in Low Moor to the Presbyterian Church, in Callaghan to a building beside the school, and Sharon also to a building near the school.
Each teacher is well prepared to teach Biblical lessons. One is an ordained minister, one is the wife of an ordained minister, and one taught Sunday School for a number of years. All members of the WRE School Board are volunteers committed to the success of the Weekday Religious Education Program.
The WRE Program welcomes aid and suggestions from those interested in the success and continuation of Weekday Religious Education.
