Local author Courtney Smith will hold a signing and book talk for her new children’s book, We are All Average Joes: A Story of Acceptance, at the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library. The event will take place on Tuesday, September 19th at 5:30 p.m. in the upstairs Community Room.

Smith has been a local resident of Alleghany County her entire life. She went to Alleghany High School and then continued her education in OT school at Southwest Virginia Community College. She has worked in the field of Occupation Therapy for a little over seven years. She mainly works with the geriatric population in a skilled nursing facility. Smith has had the privilege of completing a mission trip to Jamaica to supply OT services to young adults. She has also completed a fundraiser called “Awareness in Alleghany” to help support two local families and the Shenandoah Autism Center.

It was these experiences that inspired Smith to write her first children’s book. Her debut work is a picture book that spreads the message of acceptance for all children with disabilities. The book was illustrated by Courtney and her Nan-Nan, Nancy Smith. Creating the book together was very special for them. Courtney is thankful to all her supporters, and excited to share her book with the world, and more importantly our small town of Covington.

Copies of We are All Average Joes: A Story of Acceptance will be available for purchase the day of the event, and are also available on amazon. For more information about this author visit or other AHRL programs, call the library at (540) 962-3321. The Alleghany Highlands Regional Library is located at 406 W. Riverside Street in Covington.
