LOW MOOR — The Alleghany Highlands YMCA is hosting Welcoming Week from Friday, Sept. 8, through Sunday, Sept. 17, with a variety of activities planned for this special occasion.
Welcoming Week, an initiative of Y-USA’s national partner, Welcoming America, celebrates the growing movement of communities across the U.S. that fully embrace new Americans and their contributions to the social fabric of our country. Welcoming and engaging newcomers has remained an important component of the YMCA movement, with Y’s around the world providing individuals and families the integration support they need to better transition into their communities.
“The Alleghany Highlands is no different,” said Jennifer Unroe, CEO of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA. “Part of our mission is to welcome with open arms new residents, not only into our area but into our country.”
The Alleghany Highlands YMCA is planning numerous activities in conjunction with this week. Use the phrase “Find Your Y” and get a week pass for only $10. Become a member on Sept. 13 and the YMCA will waive the joining fee.
Then on Sept. 15, bring your favorite dish for a potluck “Lunch and Learn” with Glen Dobbs, ENT PA at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany.
Other activities include an International Bake Sale on Sept. 13 with proceeds benefitting the YMCA’s third annual Halloween Spooktacular in October, a Self-Defense course on Sept. 16 with instructor Michael Corwin and Pickleball during this special week for a drop-in fee of only $5 on Tuesday and Thursday.
“We look forward to seeing you during Welcoming Week,” Unroe added. “There should be something interesting and fun for folks of all ages.”
Since its inception, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA has provided a variety of youth and family programs and expanded memberships and services into all of the Alleghany Highlands communities. For more information on the Alleghany Highlands YMCA, call (540) 962-9622.
