LOW MOOR, VA- Last Thursday, July 27, head coach Will Fields and the new Alleghany Cougars opened up fall practice in preparation for their opening game on August 25 against Waynesboro.
With new players formerly of Covington High School joining the ranks, the two schools are now officially on the same side with a goal of working together and repeating a state tournament appearance that Alleghany, as the Mountaineers, did last season.
Fields relayed that the energy was high, and the attitudes were good on the first day.
“The players have been great, seamless transition so far. We have great coaches, with a ton of experience,” Fields said.
What is great about the start is how well the Covington kids have adapted to their new environment.
“Like I said, seamless,” Fields reiterated.
“The kids have been great. Everyone is excited about the upcoming season,” he added.
When introducing new kids and schemes into the brains of 15 to 18-year-olds, it can take some time, but that is the purpose of fall camp and why it is extremely important.
“We are focused as usual with the fundamentals of the game and teaching schemes,” Fields stated.
There is no denying the experience the Cougars will have, and that gives Fields a reason to smile early.
“I’m sure there will be a surprise, but we have a lot of returning starters on both sides of the ball when you account for players from both of the previous schools,” Fields concluded.
Alleghany will resume camp this week.
