PURCELLVILLE – On the last evening in June, the Covington Lumberjacks (10-7) continued to stay red hot as they picked up their fifth straight win following a dominant offensive outpour as they prevailed 14-2 over the Purcellville Cannons in a shortened seven-inning game.

With Covington ahead 3-2, the Lumberjacks got the separation they needed in the fourth inning as they broke the game open after a five-run inning. Logan Braunschweig for the second game in a row was the standout batter as he delivered the innings biggest hit as he ripped a two-run single that had put the Jacks’ ahead 6-2.

Kendry Noriega, Gregory Melo, and Chenar Brown each also had RBIs in the five-run fourth inning.

Covington smacked 11 hits in the game. Braunschweig and Edinson Renteria Jr. were the only two to have a multi-hit game for the Lumberjacks. Braunschweig, Noriega, Gavin Cancio, and Luke Smith each had a pair of RBIs.

Kyle Morse picked up his first win of the season after tossing 2.1 shutout innings of relief work out of the bullpen. Morse only gave up one hit, while striking out three, and walking just one. Jacob Havern started on the mound for Covington but was relieved for Morse in the third inning. Havern gave up a pair of runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out three.

Of the six team total hits, Jose Torres accounted for just over 33% of them as he went 2-for-3 at the plate for Purcellville. Seth Sumner took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) in three innings.

Covington who did not trail in the win have now not trailed in a game for 17 straight innings dating back to their 15-11 victory over the Staunton Braves.
