My brother was shot and killed by police during a mental health crisis on Friday June 30th shortly after 1pm at the Oak Hill Apartments, Apartment 2, in Clifton Forge, Virginia on June 30 2023.
He was unarmed, in crisis, and posed no threat to officers when police fatally shot him. It wasn’t a “domestic disturbance”. It was a mental health emergency involving someone who was suicidal and afraid. We called the Rockbridge area community services board crisis hotline for help. We wanted him hospitalized. They sent the police. The police charged in guns drawn, shouting orders over each other, and shot him.
My mother witnessed the entire thing. I was witness to parts of it. Police are saying he was threatening them and charged them. That’s a lie. He was unarmed, and had moved towards the back door – away from the officers – and posed no threat. I’m reaching out to try to correct the record and counter the police narrative. He didn’t have to die.
