Get Contract At Boys’ Home:
Stoughton-Mathers Company of Covington, are Successful Bidders
It has been authoritatively stated that the construction company of Stoughton & Mathers, local contractors, were successful in securing the job of constructing the new dining hall at the Boys’ Home, which is to take the place of the one destroyed by fire early this year. The new building is to be constructed on the site of the old building, the same foundation being used.
The new building, but for a few minor changes, will be exactly like the building destroyed. It will be of stuceo construction, as are all the buildings at the Home. Work has already been started on the new building.

Dial Telephones Go Into Use Here First Week In August:
Change Involves Expenditure of Quarter Million by Phone Company
Sometime during the first week in August, Covington will convert to a dial system of telephones, according to the announcement made today by the Clifton Forge-Waynesboro Telephone Company. Principal cities in the state now using this modern system of telephone communication include Richmond, Norfolk, Roanoke, Newport News, Portsmouth, and Winchester.
“A dial instrument has been installed in each subscriber’s home—now we are engaged in the work or readying our central office equipment for the conversion,” F.T. Prufer, executive vice-president of the company said today. “It is hoped that this will be completed during the first week in August, he added.
The area to be served by dial telephones on company-owned lines will extend to Barber on the north, Idlewilde on the south; east to the Jackson River bridge on Route 60 and west to Callaghan. Clifton Forge, served by the same company, will have dial telephones in 1950, the company official advised.

Stephenson To Be Installed Thursday
A special program for the installation of Roscoe B. Stephenson Jr. As Judge of the 25th Judicial Circuit of Virginia is scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Alleghany County Circuit Court Courtroom. The public is invited to attend.
Following the opening of court by Sheriff Max W. Swoope, there will be remarks by the Hon. William S. Moffett Jr., senior judge, 25th Judicial Circuit. Robert C. Hubbard, clerk of Alleghany Circuit Court will then administer the oath of office to Stephenson.
This will be followed by the presentation of a judge’s robe and remarks by the Hon. Paul A. Holsten, judge of the 25th Judicial Circuit.

Local School Bus Driver Takes Part In Road-e-o
A bus driver for the Alleghany Highlands School Division finished 14th among 35 competitors in the Virginia State School Bus Road-e-o June 22 in Williamsburg.
Garth Cartwright, a bus driver for Callaghan Elementary School, represented in the state competition.
“All of us in the school division are extremely proud of Garth and we are pleased with his performance in the event,” said Dr. Paul Linkenhoker, the school system’s coordinator for administrative services. “This was the second year we have had a driver in the road-e-o and last year’s participant, Allita Smith, was most helpful in serving as Garth’s coach and helping him prepare for the competition.”
The road-e-o tests a driver’s knowledge and skills with a written test and a road course involving 10 events and obstacles. The road-e-o is held annually during the Conference of the Virginia Association of Pupil Transportation. The conference offers seminars on school bus design safety and updates for maintenance mechanics. In addition to Cartwright, Smith, and Linkenhoker, the Alleghany Highlands School Division was represented by its Transportation Secretary, Clara Mosely, and mechanics William Hise Jr. And James Simpson.
