NEW CASTLE, VA – The Covington Lady Cougars, for a third consecutive season, wrapped-up the Pioneer District regular season title following a 20-0 five-inning shutout victory over the Craig County Lady Rockets,

Backed by another dominant performance in the circle from Kayla Bartley, the Cougars will now be the top overall seed in the district tournament and will receive a first-round bye as they await the winner of Tuesday’s first-round game between Eastern Montgomery and Narrows.

In the circle, Bartley was as dominant as ever as she gave up just one hit across five innings, while striking out 10. At the plate, Bartley helped her own cause out as she went 4-for-4 with five RBI’s, including a three-run home run.

The Cougars offense for the second straight game scored 20 or more runs. The offense erupted for 21 hits. Laken Cantrell led all batters with a five-hit day at the plate as she produced three extra base-hits, all doubles, and drove in three runs. Gabby Marshall and Addison Morris each had three hits as well, while Marshall had three RBI’s and Morris drove in one. Serenity Campbell launched a two-out solo home run during a six-run first-inning.

Sara Jones provided the Rockets lone hit of the game as she led off the second inning with a single. Following Jone’s hit, Bartley retired the final 12 batters she faced. Jones also took the loss after giving up 11 runs on 10 hits in 1.2 innings in the circle.
