FLOYD COUNTY, Va. (VR) – Bath County finished fifth at the regional golf tournament, but the Chargers showed significant improvement while gaining valuable experience against some of the area’s top teams.
Auburn won the regional title with a 317 and advanced to the state tournament, followed by Fort Chiswell, which also earned a trip to states. Giles finished third at 350, George Wythe fourth at 395, Bath County fifth at 402 and Eastern Montgomery sixth at 457.
The final individual cutoff to advance was an 82.
Atticus Stauffer led the Chargers with a two-round total of 97 after shooting 49 on the front nine and 48 on the back. Akio Long followed at 98 (51-47), while Draven Whitmore carded a 100 (54-46).
Michael Keyes finished at 107 (56-51), Zachariah Foster shot 115 (64-51) and Aydin Auldridge finished at 141 (72-69).
The Chargers’ 402 was a significant improvement from last year’s regional total of 434 at The Homestead.
Bath County also closed the gap considerably on Eastern Montgomery. After finishing nine strokes behind Eastern Montgomery at the district tournament, the Chargers turned the tables at regionals, finishing 55 strokes ahead of the team.
The regional tournament will return to the Pioneer District next season, with Bath County set to serve as host.
“We are closing the gap,” head coach Lyle Kampf noted following the tournament. “Can’t wait for next year when the tournament comes back to the Pioneer District as hosts.”
