COVINGTON, VA – One day after giving up a season-high 33 runs in a loss to Narrows, the Covington Cougars came back in a big way as they closed its chapter at Casey Field with a 12-1 victory in five innings over Pioneer District rival Bath County on Wednesday.

On the mound, for the second straight start, Trey Cook was cookin’ as he recorded his second straight complete-game victory. After giving up one unearned run in the first inning, Cook was unhittable as he finished the game giving up just the one run. The Chargers managed only two hits off Cook while he struck out seven and walked four.

Already ahead by two runs in the bottom of the third inning, Garrett Carper ripped a two-run double to right-center. With a boisterous crowd cheering on the home team, the Cougars fed off the energy and scored two more times in the inning to take a 7-1 lead. Carper had a game-high three hits in three at-bats, along with three RBIs to lead all players.

The Cougars would expand their lead in the fourth inning by putting up another five runs on the scoreboard. Hayden Rodgers, playing in his final home game, had two RBI’s. Ethan Martin, who collected one hit in two at-bats, had a big RBI single that tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. Landon Arritt also had a two-hit day at the plate.

As a team, the Cougars collected more stolen bases than they did hits (7) as they finished with eight steals in the win. Martin and Luke Conner led the way with two steals a piece.

Cooper Lowry and Ethan Persinger each had singles for the Chargers, while Wyatt Campbell had the team’s lone run scored. Hunter Ryder suffered the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits, while walking four, and striking out three.

While Cougars played their final home game ever on Wednesday, their final ever regular season game is on Thursday when they visit the Craig County Rockets. In the first meeting on April 20th, the Rockets were 9-3 winners. The Chargers regular season concluded on Wednesday.
