LOW MOOR, VA – The long ball was in full-effect on Thursday for the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (10-4/2-3) in their 13-1 non-district victory over the Rockbridge County Wildcats.
The Mountaineers belted five home runs in the win. Sophomore Savannah Cash had a three-home-run evening, while driving in four RBI’s. Bryce Leitch had a breakout performance at the plate as she belted two-home-runs, including a grand-slam. Leitch finished the game with seven RBI’s.
On a night where AHS seniors Kalin Rice and Kendell Keene were honored for senior night, Keene picked up her ninth win of the season after pitching a five-inning complete-game. Keene gave up just one run on seven hits, while walking one, and striking out four. Rice went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored a pair of runs.
While Cash and Leitch drove in a combined 11 runs, sophomore Kelsey Nicely who had one hit in three at bats, was the only other Mountie with an RBI in the teams 12-run victory.
Nicely drove in the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning, which was then followed by the first of three Cash home runs as she drove a two-run shot over the center field fence.
After being held scoreless in the second and third innings, the Mountaineers pushed across five runs in the fourth inning, which was kickstarted by Cash’s second home run of the game as the team had taken a 4-1 lead. Several batters later, Leitch with the bases loaded ripped the first of her two home runs over the center field fence as the Mounties took an 8-1 lead.
The home team would follow the next inning with another five-runs. Cash, who led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, did so again in the fifth for her third of the game. Several batters later, Leitch ended the game on a three-run home run. The game ended due to VHSL rules that if a team led by 12 runs after five innings the game would be concluded.
Kelsey Caldwell and Marla Zollman led the Wildcats with two hits each. Parker Dameron, who had one hit in three at bats, drove in the Wildcats run of the game. Sadie Moore suffered the loss after allowing 13 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. More walked one, and struck out six.
The Mountaineers who have now won three of their last four games host the Radford Bobcats on Monday at 5:00 p.m.
