LOW MOOR, VA – After seeing their six-game win streak come to an end last Wednesday, the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (8-3/2-2) split a home double-header on Friday night with the Carroll County Lady Cavaliers. Both games since it was a doubleheader were only scheduled to go five innings and not the full seven.
In game one, the Lady Mountaineers at the time dropped their second game in a row, which marked the first time this year that they lost back-to-back games. The Lady Cavaliers back by a big three-run third inning held on to a 4-0 shutout victory as the Lady Mountaineers were held to just two hits.
Emma Leath (W/0-for-3) was nearly unhittable for the Lady Cavaliers in game one of the doubleheader. Leath gave up just two hits and struck out 11. Nearly 80% of her pitches thrown were for strikes. Kalee Easter (2-for-3) led the team with two of their six hits at the plate, while producing an RBI in the fourth inning for an fourth insurance run. Brooke Nance (0-for-2) brought in the team’s third run of the third inning on a sacrifice bunt.
Savannah Cash (L/0-for-2) suffered the loss for the Lady Mountaineers as she went the distance as well as she gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits, while walking three, and striking out three in her five innings. Kinsey Middleton (1-for-2) and Kendell Keene (1-for-2) had the team’s only hits in the first game.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Lady Mountaineers, although the hosts, played as the road team. They also reversed the roles in the second game as the Lady Mountaineers were the ones pitching a shutout as they were victorious 2-0 over the Lady Cavaliers.
The Lady Mountaineers were backed by Keene’s (W/0-for-2) five-inning complete game shutout where she gave up just three hits and struck out four.
After being held scoreless for eight straight innings, Middleton broke a scoreless game with a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning. Bryce Leitch (1-for-2) and Cash (1-for-2) each had the team’s only other hits.
Leath (L/1-for-2) starting her second game of the day suffered the game-two loss this time around. While she took the loss, she was solid once again on the mound for the Lady Cavaliers. Leath allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out four. She had 15 strikeouts across both games.
The Lady Mountaineers will look to build on that second game of the doubleheader and begin a new streak on Tuesday when the team hosts the James River Lady Knights.
