COVINGTON, VA – The Covington Cougars (2-8/0-4) struggled to get anything going offensively Thursday evening as the team dropped its fifth straight game following a 10-0 loss to the Narrows Green Waves in a Pioneer District meeting.

The Cougars offense was held to just three hits in the game, though they did have four walks, the offense struggled striking out a dozen times.

Luke Conner (2-for-3) led the team with two of their three hits, while David Crowder (1-for-1) had the Cougars only other hit. Meanwhile, Hayden Rodgers (0-for-1) walked two times.

Garrett Carper (L/0-for-2) suffered the loss despite a solid performance on the mound as he did go five innings deep into the game. Carper gave up all five runs (two earned) in the fifth inning after pitching a shutout through the first four innings. Carper gave up seven hits, walked two, and struck out a pair. Crowder and Rodgers both saw time on the mound as Crowder allowed five runs (all earned) in 0.2 innings, while Rodgers retired one of the two batters he faced.

Mason McCroskey (1-for-3) and Reed Perdue (1-for-4) led a balanced offensive attack at the plate for the Green Waves as they both provided two RBI’s in the win. Carson Crigger (2-for-4) led the team with a two-hit day at the plate, while providing the team with their only extra base hit coming on a triple. Crigger also knocked in a run. The duo of Brody Robertson (W/0-for-0) and Aidan McGlothlin (1-for-3) on the mound were stellar for the Green Waves as the duo combined to pitch a three-hit shutout through six innings due to the VHSL mercy rule. Robertson and A. McGlothlin each walked two and struck out six each.

The fifth inning provided the difference the Green Waves needed, and it was sparked by Criggers one-out RBI triple that scored the game’s first run. Two batters later, Perdue followed with an RBI single to go up 2-0. The Green Waves would score three more in the inning to take a 5-0 lead.

The Green Waves would add five more in the sixth inning to take a commanding 10-run lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cougars had their best chance at scoring some runs, but it came with two outs and two on base. A. McGlothlin would get out of the jam and kept the Cougars off the scoreboard.

The Cougars will look to snap their losing streak on Monday as they head to Swoope, VA to play the Buffalo Gap Bison in a non-district meeting.
