COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Lumberjacks finished a three-game stretch with a 1-2 record, opening with a shutout victory over Waynesboro before dropping a one-run contest at Harrisonburg and falling to the Express on Father’s Day at Casey Field.
Covington’s best performance of the weekend came Friday night in a 3-0 win over Waynesboro.
Hunter DePriest dominated on the mound, allowing just one hit over seven innings while striking out eight. Robert Boing tossed a scoreless eighth inning and Eli Porter clos1ed out the ninth for his first save of the season.
The Lumberjacks scored in the first inning when Chris Carroll reached base, stole second and later came home. Frankie Clark scored in the second inning to make it 2-0 before Covington added an insurance run in the eighth on Cross Yarborough’s sacrifice fly.
Clark led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Bryant Zayas added two hits, including a double, while Carroll, Luis Acosta and Yarborough each recorded a hit. Acosta and Yarborough drove in runs as Covington collected seven hits and turned two double plays defensively.
Saturday night, the Lumberjacks rallied late but came up short in a 5-4 loss to the Harrisonburg Turks.
Covington grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning before Harrisonburg tied the game in the third. The score remained even until the seventh when the Turks scored twice to take control. Harrisonburg added two more runs in the ninth before the Lumberjacks answered with a late rally that fell one run short.
Cross Yarborough paced the offense, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a walk. George Pardo Jr. added two hits and a run scored, while Bryant Zayas recorded two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Chris Carroll and Luis Acosta each drove in a run. Covington swiped seven bases but stranded 18 runners on base in the loss.
Nikolas Koorse allowed one earned run over 2.2 innings in the start. Deundre Jones provided 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Quindon Wright took the loss after allowing two runs in 1.1 innings.
The weekend concluded Sunday with an 18-8 loss to the Express at Casey Field.
The Express jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning and five more in the second to build a 9-2 lead. They extended the advantage to 13-2 through four innings before Covington mounted a comeback attempt.
The Lumberjacks scored two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the Express answered with five runs in the sixth to pull away.
Covington finished with 13 hits. Zach Doorlag blasted his 1st home run of the season and finished with a run scored and an RBI. Darrius Brown led the offense by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
George Pardo Jr. went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Cross Yarborough, Peter Crespo and Bryant Zayas also collected multiple hits. Brown doubled twice and Zayas added a double.
Andy Hernandez was charged with the loss after allowing nine runs over 1.2 innings. Enzo Gurgel struck out two over two innings of relief, while Daniel Perruc, Aniel Berbes and Robert Boing also worked out of the bullpen.
The Lumberjacks closed the three-game stretch with a 1-2 record, scoring 15 runs while collecting 28 hits.
