STAUNTON, Va. (VR) – The Lumberjacks dropped their third straight game Wednesday night, falling 3-1 to Staunton on the road.
Covington and Staunton were locked in a scoreless pitching duel through seven innings before the Lumberjacks finally broke through in the top of the eighth. Cross Yarborough singled and later scored when George Pardo Jr. reached on a fielder’s choice, giving Covington a 1-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived.
Staunton answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. Hudson Walburn delivered the game-changing hit, a two-run single that was aided by a Covington error in right field. The play allowed three runs to cross the plate, including one unearned run, as Staunton took a 3-1 lead and held on for the victory.
The Lumberjacks managed just two hits in the contest. Yarborough finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Caleb Miele accounted for the other hit, a double. Pardo Jr. drove in Covington’s lone run and added a stolen base.
Frankie Clark reached base twice with a pair of walks, while Jake Ambrosio recorded a sacrifice bunt and stole a base.
Luke Richards turned in a strong start, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out four. Robert Boing followed with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Andy Hernandez suffered the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, in the eighth inning.
Staunton finished with three runs on five hits and one error. Covington scored one run on two hits and committed one error.
The Jacks are back at home tonight hosting Culpeper, first pitch 6:30.
