COVINGTON, Va. – The Alleghany JV Mountaineers defeated Riverheads 6-5 on Friday, March 17, after taking the lead late in the game.

The contest was tied at 5-all with Alleghany batting in the top of the seventh, when Graycin Brewster singled on the first pitch of the at bat, and knocked in a run for the Mountaineers, and secured a nice win.

Alleghany (1-0) got things going quickly in the first inning, when Paige Webb blasted a 2-run homer on a 3-2 count to put the Mountaineers up 2-0 early.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Riverheads tied things up at 5-apiece when Swats drove in two runs when she singled on a ground ball to the left side of the infield.

After Alleghany scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Riverheads answered with two of their own.  Riverheads then answered when Huffer doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, and two runs scored.

Madison Lowry was the winning pitcher for the Alleghany JV. The righthander scattered eight hits and five runs over seven innings and struck out five batters.

Croft took the loss for Riverheads. She went the full seven innings, allowed six runs on six hits and fanned 11.

Brewster went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Mountaineers in hits.

Haley Harmon and Kinlee Huffman also had one hit apiece.

Riverheads racked up eight hits in the game. Mays (3-4) and Swats both managed multiple hits for the Lady Gladiators.
