LYNCHBURG, Va. (TVR) – Alleghany High School freshman Kiera Lowman continued her dominant freshman year with another great performance at the Class 1 and 2 state indoor track championships held at Liberty University.
Lowman was the runner-up in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, where she broke her own school records in each race. In the 1,600-meter run, Lowman ran 5:17.07, while in the 3,200-meter run, Lowman finished with a time of 11:08.56.
A fellow freshman out of Poquoson High School, Elizabeth Trant, finished first just ahead of Lowman in both the 1,600 and 3,200. Trant finished just over five seconds ahead of Lowman in the 1,600 and by less than three seconds.
Lowman was the girls’ runner at the state championships and helped the Mountaineers to a 13th place finish, which saw 39 schools place in scoring. The Mountaineers’ girls’ team finished with 16 points. The Floyd County Lady Buffaloes won the girls’ state title with a score of 55. Poquoson High School was the runner-up with 44 points.
Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, three more records were broken.
In the 55-meter dash, Connor McPeek broke the school record with a time of 6.71, which also gave him a fifth-place overall finish.
The 500-meter race saw two school records broken, as Brady Prior finished fifth overall with a time of 1:09.39, which broke the school record, while Brennon Mahon set the second-place record with a time of 1:09.40, which was good for sixth place overall. Prior and Mahon were just a few thousandths of a second separated from one another.
When you look back at the AHS triple jump record for first and second all-time, it will now forever be read as Dalton Griffith and Andrew Craft. Griffith broke the school record with a jump 41-09 that gave him a fifth-place finish, while Craft had a jump of 41-07 for a sixth-place result.
The boys’ team finished ninth overall with 26 points. The Glenvar Highlanders won the boys state championship with 58 points as they held off Bruton High School who finished with 49.
