James Madison University announces Spring 2026 President’s List

COVINGTON, Va. (VR) -  The Covington VA250 Carnival wrapped up Saturday night with a boom — literally — as a spectacular fireworks display brought the three-day celebration to a close.
The event drew strong crowds throughout the weekend, with Saturday night attracting the largest attendance. Families and visitors filled the carnival grounds, enjoying rides, games, food vendors, and live entertainment. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, screams from thrill-seekers, and the aroma of classic carnival favorites.
The event was well received across the Alleghany Highlands, with many attendees suggesting it should become an annual tradition.
Saturday night's entertainment featured REO Survivor and Co., who delivered a high-energy performance at the amphitheater that kept music fans entertained throughout the evening.
The celebration concluded with a fireworks show that lasted nearly 20 minutes, lighting up the night sky and providing a memorable ending to the weekend festivities.
Covington Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Worley thanked the many volunteers, sponsors, organizations, and community members who helped make the event possible.
It had been a very long time since the Alleghany Highlands hosted an event of this size and scope. Thanks to the efforts of Worley and countless others behind the scenes, the VA250 Carnival proved to be a successful celebration and a fitting tribute as America approaches its 250th birthday. CLIFTON FORGE — A sold-out crowd filled the Historic Masonic Theatre on Sunday evening for the Virginia 250 Flag Day Patriotic Tribute, a special celebration marking America's upcoming 250th birthday.
The free concert featured the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro David Stewart Wiley, joined by special soloist Dr. E. Daryl Duff.
One of the evening's most memorable moments came during the "Armed Forces Salute," when local veterans were invited to stand and be recognized as the musical tribute to their respective military branches was performed. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause as veterans throughout the theater were honored for their service.
The presentation was made possible through the support of the Alleghany Foundation, Historic Masonic Theatre, Town of Clifton Forge, Alleghany County, City of Covington, Mountain Gateway Community College Educational Foundation, Mountain Gateway Community College, Alleghany Highlands Arts Council, and the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

Dear Editor,
Everyone is aware that this election will determine the future for America.
It might be a wise thing to vote policy instead of personality.  In order to do that, an individual must research the policies of each party.  Don’t believe just what you hear from newscasters or journalists, but find out for yourself. Discover the truth.
The future of our children and grandchildren, as well as our own, hangs in the balance.
For a country to govern themselves, there must be virtue in the souls of the population.  We must examine our hearts to vote with virtue and truth.
When searching for answers, and hopefully the truth, one must be sure that is not posted by news media of any kind.  Rather be sure that the Democratic Party or Republican Party has actually set up the webpage — Democratic Policy 2021 or Republican Party 2021.
Let’s know where they stand and where our support should be.
Sincerely,
Gwen Vess Whitmore

Dear Editor,
As the election nears, each person running for office is trying to give you reasons to vote for us as individuals.
One incumbent is currently taking credit for all the accomplishments of Clifton Forge Town Council — both past and present councils. The actions of the council are agreed upon and promoted by the entire council, never just one member.
All council members have an equal voice, and we all work equally for progress in our town. Failing to follow the town charter and bypassing the town manager and the remainder of the council members is not a qualifying accomplishment of re-election to the town council.
Taking credit as sole owner of the positive actions in our town shows a lack of personal integrity and character — and a lack of acknowledgment of team work. In addition, it disparages the council’s efforts to serve the people of Clifton Forge.
Some of the shared accomplishments of the council include, cleaning up the old C&O shops, bringing Houff Industries to town, recognition of housing improvements beyond the corridor program.
Great things happen when council and citizens collaborate together.
Sincerely,
Town Councilman, Dave Oeltjen

Dear Editor,
A $1.8 trillion stimulus bill has been proposed on behalf of President Trump. Many on the “Left” have stated that this bill is not bad and is somewhat decent. Yet Pelosi, the Democratic Party Elite, and Senate Republicans are pledged to defeat this bill. Why?
They all give various reasons but it really comes down to this. They do not want President Trump to get massive credit going into the election.
The Progressive elements of the Democratic Party are not really concerned about politics at the moment and they reached out to House Speaker Pelosi to accept this bill. They realize that tens of millions of Americans are now in a state of crisis and that they need immediate help. Yet their concerns are being drowned out by the elites of both political parties.
Perhaps President Trump is part of the global elite that want to control the citizens of the world. However, the odds of him being a vanguard against such tyrannical forces is far greater.
He is the only president in the last 50 years who has suffered financially because of his presidency. He has been under constant threat of assassination for the last four years. His presidency has even put his family members at risk.
So the chances of him not being a reformer are unlikely.
It is true that much of his administration is filled with insiders. However, what better way to take down “unaccountable government” than to get people who were part of it and know its inner workings?
Personally, I never heard of the “Deep State” until Trump became president. Again, I never knew how much unaccountable and non-transparent bureaucratic agencies as well as the private/NGO sector controlled federal government activities until Trump became president.
This letter is not designed to advise anyone as to how to vote. With Republicans and Democrats both being “birds of the same feather,”? we need politicians who will not flock together with the Party Elites. Keep that in mind on Election Day.
The month after Election Day will be even more newsworthy than Election Day itself! Supposedly only 76 percent of Republicans support Trump.
However, 68 percent of swing voters favor Trump. It appears many Democrats may vote for Trump, especially the ones who are progressive.
However, what could be the deal clincher is the black vote. Trump may get in excess of 20 percent as so many blacks are tired of the fake promises by the Dems.
Even if Donald Trump is perceived as being corrupt, it is on an individual basis. He simply is not perceived as a symbol of institutionalized corruption.
That is why the majority of his supporters will vote for him.
These elections will be interesting. The problem in Virginia is Northern Virginia. Their highly congested population in a small area will drown out the voices of native-born Virginians throughout the entire state in these upcoming elections.
Very Truly Yours,
Harsha Sankar
