Mine Explosion Reported Near Bluefield Early Today
Thirty miners were imprisoned today as a result of an explosion in the Boissevain mine of the Pocahontas Fuel Company, on the Virginia side of the line, today. One man who reached the surface said he heard an explosion and that he immediately left the workings. A check up showed thirty men still in the mine and unaccounted for. They were all at work at the time of the explosion.

Salvation Army Presents Awards
Awards were presented by Captain Ronald L. Davis of the Salvation Army to individuals and organizations at a dinner meeting Monday evening. The meeting was held in the Blue Room of the Collins Hotel Building. Recognition of services donated to the Salvation Army, especially at the Christmas season, was made in the form of awarding plaques to recipients representing local organizations. Members of the Advisory Board are Richard F. Beirne III, chairman; Russell Smith, vice-chairman; J. Lacy Jordan, Paul B. Lacy Jr., Earl M. Key, R.M. Loving Sr., Albert Arritt and William Dressler.

Mizzy Closing Means Loss Of 42 Jobs At Clifton Forge Plant
Mizzy Inc.’s manufacturing plant at Cliftondale Park will cease operations in the highlands March 13 leaving 42 employees without jobs. An announcement of the plant closing was made to employees Wednesday by Carey Robinson, vice president of National Keystone of Cherry Hill. N.J. Mizzy and National Keystone are both manufacturers of dental supplies and on December 17 of last year Keystone purchased the Mizzy company which was headquartered in New York.

Covington Cougars Are Region C Champs
The Covington Cougars captured the region C, Division 1 championship Saturday night with a 39-23 win over Galax at Eastern Montgomery High School. Shown, in photo below, kissing the championship trophy during the postgame celebration are, from left, Mary Woodson, Sa’Mone Moore and Briana Moore. The Cougars will play Haysi in a 4:30 p.m. state quarterfinal game at the Salem Civic Center Saturday.
