Scott Hill Retirement Community in Clifton Forge held a free luncheon for area veterans on Veterans Day, Fri., Nov. 11.
Veterans were treated to a complimentary lunch in their honor. The meal consisted of stuffed chicken, cornbread, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, rolls, tossed salad and cake.
Located at 800 W. Ridgeway St. in Clifton Forge, Scott Hill Retirement Community accommodates those who are 62 and older, those who have physical disabilities, and low-income citizens.
One or two-bedroom apartments are available, ones with a full kitchen, and the building is equipped with elevators.
Pam Brown, an employee of Scott Hill Retirement Community who served as one of the coordinators of the Veterans Day Luncheon, remarked, “Sadly, we had only eight veterans show up, six from here and two from the community.”
The Scott Hill Retirement Community is situated on a hill overlooking the Jackson River and the CSX railroad yard.
The C&O Hospital that was built there more than 100 years ago was renamed to honor Dr. John M. Emmett in 1971. Emmett Memorial Hospital served the Alleghany Highlands till it was no longer needed following the opening of Alleghany Regional Hospital, a 204-bed facility, in Low Moor in 1979.
Following the closing of Emmett Memorial Hospital, the facility was repurposed as the Scott Hill Retirement Community.
