As rain fell, Post Commander Shawn Wright, who served in the U.S. Navy, led VFW Post 1033’s “Veterans Day Ceremony” that was held under Covington’s Farmers Market Pavilion on Fri., Nov. 11.

World War I, commonly known as “the war to end all wars” officially ended on June 28, 1918, but the fighting between Germany and the Allies had ceased seven months earlier.
The signing of the armistice ended hostilities on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, and Nov. 11, became Armistice Day during President Woodrow Wilson’s administration in 2019.
Following World War II, President Dwight David Eisenhower signed HR7786 on June 1, 1954, the bill that changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
The VFW Post 1033’s Ceremony began at the eleventh hour, and Covington’s Mayor Tom Sibold and acting City Manager B.B. Bryant who will serve in that position until newly appointed City Manager Allen Dressler returns from vacation later in Nov. both attended the ceremony.
