LOW MOOR — Alleghany High School and Greenbrier East High School have agreed to start a cross-border rivalry in football.
AHS will travel to Lewisburg, W.Va., in September 2023 to take on the Spartans in the first game of the “Border Rivalry.”
Alleghany High School and Covington High School will merge in the fall of 2023 and form a joint high school which will be named Alleghany High School. The joint high school will be housed in the current AHS building in Valley Ridge. The scheduling of athletic events for the joint high school is already under way.
Bryan Stinespring, the activities director of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, said the scheduling of Greenbrier East is part of a strategy to create rivalry games for the joint high school. In past years, both Alleghany and Covington high schools played Greenbrier East in football.
“Alleghany and Greenbrier East have been in communication for the past couple of months in hopes of creating a border rivalry. We are excited about the opportunity to have Greenbrier East back on the schedule. We both believe that proximity can help create an additional rivalry game,” Stinespring said.
Alleghany and Greenbrier East are approximately 40 miles apart. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from AHS to Greenbrier East.
“With both high schools representing the first high schools across the state line on Interstate 64, this presents a great opportunity to have a great atmosphere on game day,” Stinespring said.
In another move to create a regional rivalry for Alleghany High School, Stinespring has announced the scheduling of a football game with Rockbridge County High School in Lexington. That game will also be played in September.
The mascot for Alleghany High School next fall will be the Cougar. The Cougar was selected to maintain the proud history and traditions of Covington High School. The school colors will be navy blue and Columbia blue, representing a blending of the current colors for Covington High School and Alleghany High School. The school colors were chosen by students in voting that took place in fall 2021.
