After a regular season Pioneer District Championship, the Covington Cougars (20-4) are now within one victory of the District Tournament Championship.
On Wednesday at the Cougar Den, the Parry McCluer Fighting Blues gave it their best efforts in all three matches against the Cougars and kept the sets relatively close, but the Cougars won their semifinal victory of the Fighting Blues in straight sets.
Leading the for the Cougars in their semifinal victory was Kaiya Lian who had nine kills and seven digs. It was also a big night from Jayahna Hughes who had 10 kills and nine assists, while Aubrey Brown added a team-high of 11 digs.
The Cougars host the district championship game this evening at the Cougar Den against the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs. The Mustangs were the last team to beat the Cougars during the regular season which came in a home victory for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs advanced to the district tournament championship by winning on the road against the Narrows Green Wave in five sets, 25-20, 12-25, 14-25, 25-19, 15-8.
The Green Wave hosts the Fighting Blues this evening in the district tournament consolation game.
Meanwhile, regardless of tonight’s outcome for the Cougars, a district tournament victory or loss, the Cougars next match will be in the Class 1, Region C tournament this coming Tuesday. The Cougars will host Grayson County (11-11).
