After COVID-19 briefly shut down professional sports in America, a Sports Equinox occurred on Sept. 10, 2020, with sporting events being held in the NBA, MLB, MLS, NFL, NHL, WNBA and Tennis.

On Thurs., Oct. 20, the 27th Sports Equinox occurred when the New York Yankees met the Houston Astros in the second game of the MLB championship series, the New Orleans Saints visited the Arizona Cardinals, and two MLS finals matchups took place plus an NFL Thur. night game.

The first Sports Equinox occurred on Oct. 17, 1971, but from 1985 till 2001, not a single Sports Equinox took place.

A Sports Equinox by definition is when NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB all have games scheduled on the same day.

After the NFL began scheduling Thurs. night football games in 2006, the frequency of Sports Equinoxes increased.

Games were played in all four of the leagues on Oct. 21, 2021, to create a Sports Equinox, and the Sports Equinox on Thurs, Oct. 20, occurred almost exactly 12 months later.

The first Super Sports Equinox took place on Oct. 28, 2018, and Arizona is the only state to experience a Sports Equinox within its boundaries. The event took place in 2016 when 27 games took place in Arizona on the same day.
