The Mountaineers (4-4/0-3) are coming off of their third straight loss following a 31-6 Three Rivers District defeat to the Glenvar Highlanders.
Despite the outcome, the Mountaineers played hard throughout the game and even shut down the Highlanders in the first quarter and a third of the way through the second quarter before surrendering 10 points in the quarter.
While the watch is on offensive star Garrett Via who is closing in on several school records, the Mountaineers have found another star in Dalton Griffith who scored the teams only touchdown last week, coming on his fifth rushing touchdown, and also added 36 rushing yards.
The Mountaineers are making things very difficult for opposing defenses trying to figure out not only Via, but Griffith as well.
After a 3-0 start to their season, the Mountaineers have lost four of their last five games and we’ll look to snap their losing streak on Friday against the 1-6 Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers who are giving up over 39 points a game will need their best defensive effort of the season if they want to contain not just Via and Griffith, but the entire Mountaineers team that is ready to snap their losing streak, especially when the team is averaging over 26 points a game.
Last year at Mountaineer Field, the Cavaliers hung onto a 31-27 victory over the Mountaineers. Via had a 42 yard touchdown in that game.

For the first time since the 2018 season, the Chargers have won at least three games.
Following their 33-13 home Pioneer District victory over the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs last Friday, the Chargers sit at the top of the district with Narrows at 2-0.
After losing three straight road games following a 2-1 start to their season, the Chargers returned back home to Carl F. Williams Field in a big way against the Mustangs.
Led by Kamoy Stone and Wyatt Campbell, the Chargers jumped out to a 26-6 lead at the end of the first half.
Stone set the pace of the game by returning the opening kickoff 75 yards to the end zone.
The Mustangs never recovered following that.
Stone would score a second touchdown on a pass from Campbell.
Campbell recorded four touchdowns in the win; two touchdown passes, a rushing touchdown, and an interception returned for the score.
As if Campbell wasn’t already tough enough for defenses to solve, now teams will have to solve him on offense.
The same for Stone, who also had an interception in the win over the Mustangs.
On Friday, the Chargers head back on the road looking for their first road victory as they face the Rockets who are 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the district.
While the Chargers have given up the most points in the district, the Rockets have given up the least, but the Rockets have only played five games.
Last season the Chargers defeated the Rockets 19-10 at home.

The Cougars who seemed as if they were headed towards their first win of the season had a heartbreaking defeat at home to the Narrows Green Wave 44-38.
After leading 22-6 at halftime and another 16 point lead later in the third quarter, the Green Wave rallied back timely and pulled out the victory with a touchdown with just over two minutes remaining in the game which gave them their first lead.
The come from behind victory out shadowed the five touchdown performance from Purcel Turner who has been a nightmare for the Green Wave the last two seasons as he has had seven touchdowns against them.
After their crushing loss last week, the team will have to put it behind them as they towards what could be an emotional night for players, coaches, fans, and the community as the Cougars take the field one final time at Boodie Albert Stadium.
The Cougars host the Fighting Blues for the final Covington High School game.
The Fighting Blues are 2-5 this season and in the middle of the pack in the Pioneer District at 1-1, while coming off of a 41-7 victory over the Craig County.
Last year the Fighting Blues won 35-6, but the game was called in the third quarter due to the Cougars not having enough healthy players. John Snider IV, who then was a junior, had 308 total yards and five touchdowns for the Fighting Blues. The Cougars will have to stop him on the run.
