Alma Gertrude Watts, age 96, of 1867 Harvard Road, Waynesboro, Virginia died Thursday, September 1, 2022, in Waynesboro, Virginia.
Alma was born May 25, 1926, in Covington, Virginia to the late Harry Leibig and Helen Hull Watts. She was a retired teacher and coach with over 50 years of experience in education, including 20 years at Clifton Forge High School and many years for the Alleghany County Public Schools. She also coached basketball at Clifton Forge High School and taught many students to drive as a Driver’s Education instructor, which she continued to do for adults as well. In her retirement, Alma stayed busy as a volunteer for Alleghany Regional Hospital and the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic. She was a member of Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church and was well known in the community.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice of the Shenandoah Valley for their love and care during such a difficult time.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Scott Watts and Harry Brick Watts, a sister, Miriam Rebecca Watts; and her special companion, Cody.
She is survived by two nieces and a nephew, Kathy Perry of Hot Springs, Vicky Jarvis of Whitsett, NC, and Wayne Watts of Suffolk; her goddogs, Toby, and Molly; her friends with whom she resided, Danielle Eavers and Jackie Almarode; special friends, Nannie West and Hope Lee; her lifetime friend, Sandra Dutemple and many former students, players, and friends.
A funeral service was held on Sunday, September 3, 2022, at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Mr. Chris Fisher officiating. She was laid to rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington. Pallbearers were Eddie Graham, Randy Armstrong, Josh Burton, Randall Barber, Robert Barber, Randy Ashby, Chris Walker, and Reginald Wallace. The family visited with friends an hour prior to the service at Nicely Funeral Home.
