At last weekends Knights Crossing Invitational cross country meet at Green Hill Park in Salem, Alleghany freshman Kiera Lowman crushed a 29 year old school record when she finished her 5K with a time of 18:55.50.

Lowman’s school record setting performance led her to finish second in the girls 5K as she helped guide the Mountaineers girls team to an overall runner-up performance. The Mountaineers were held off by Charlotte Latin School, a private school in North Carolina. Lowman finished 14 second behind the girls 5K race winner, Kerrigan Chaney from North Cross.

The school record had been owned by Kathy Reynolds since 1993 when she ran a 19:36.

“Kiera’s whole team is very proud of her. She works hard, is super positive and motivates others to be better. Even her opponents love her”, said Mountaineers head coach, Jeremy Bartley.

The Mountaineers girls team had two top-20 runners, Lowman and Gracie Barron, who placed 19th overall with a time of 21:08.10

For the boys, the Mountaineers finished 14th as a team out of 23 teams. Kellen Lowman finished 42nd overall with a time of 18:40.20. North Cross won the boys event.

“Both varsity teams ran well. We have started the season conservatively so we will peak at the right time”, said Coach Bartley.

Meanwhile, the Clifton Forge Falcons girls team finished in ninth place out of 25 teams in the 4K, while the boys team finished 17th out of 28 teams.

Out of 297 total event runners, Faith Barron led the Falcons girls team with an eighth overall with a time of 17:01.20. Levi Bartley led the boys with a 45th place finish with a time of 16:32.90. There were over 350 runners in the boys event.

The Mountaineers and Falcons will next run at this weekends Augusta Invitational at Wilson Memorial High School.
