Carnegie Hall’s Family Fun Series Spring Semester offered classes perfect for the whole family. Parents, Grandparents, and children participated in fun-filled activities that offered both education and entertainment. All the workshops were well attended.
Spring Family Fun classes and workshops included Spa Day: Body Butter with Tommye Rafes, Art Journaling with Kathleen DeRouen, Collage Creations with Marguerite Kemp-Sherman, Acrylic Painting with Sandra Schmocker, Pysanky Eggs with April Vincent, All About Pie with Harmony Flora, Feel for the Wheel: single day clay classes with Kelsie Tyson, World of Beads with Jennifer Spencer, Jewelry Making with Jennifer Spencer, and Growing and Arranging Flowers for Your Home with Alaina Hower.
Education Director Harmony Flora introduced the Family Fun Dates into Carnegie’s annual spring class and workshop series as a way for families of all ages to share in a fun new experience. “Making art together is a great way to learn and make lasting memories and I am very pleased that there was such a great response to the new programming, she explained. “We were able to hold all of the new classes this year, which included the very popular Feel for the Wheel pottery classes with Kelsie Tyson, a two-day Art Journaling class with Kathleen DeRouen, and a Spa Day: Body Butter class with Tommye Rafes.”
Students from eight West Virginia counties and five states attended classes, and Carnegie Hall partnered with the West Virginia Woodworking Association and Lost Creek Farm to bring their crafts to the Greenbrier Valley. Mike Costello and Amy Dawson of Lost Creek Farm have been named 2022 James Beard Award semifinalists in the category of Best Chef, Southeast. Also, Jennie Williams, the Director of the WV Folklife Program for the WV Humanities Council attended the Salt Rising Bread Workshop in January.
A wide range of ages participated in the series. The youngest student was four years old and the oldest 81. The May 14 Feel For The Wheel workshop was attended by entire family of eight in the area for a family reunion.
Due to the success, the series will continue for the 2023 spring session with new additions. Carnegie Hall is looking for new teaching artist in traditional crafts and folkways.
