Following a weekend in which the Covington Lumberjacks (9-11) matched their season-high three-game win streak, the Lumberjacks continued with their winning ways by reaching a new season-high to four games following their 7-0 victory in game one of the teams doubleheader on Tuesday over the Purcellville Cannons (8-14).

The Lumberjacks winning streak would be snapped in the second game of the doubleheader as the Cannons rallied in later part of the game to prevail 3-2.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Lumberjacks were backed by Ryan Schneider (W) who picked up his first win of the season in his first start. Prior to his start on Tuesday, Schneider had four relief appearances. Schneider pitched 5.1 scoreless innings while giving up four hits, one walk, and struck out three.

Trevor Wall and Cooper Webb combined to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of Schneider.

The Lumberjacks collected eight hits in the win. The team had three players with a multiple-hit performance including Valley Baseball League (VBL) batting average leader, Gavin Baird (2-for-3). Evan Wickeri (1-for-4), Nate Stocum (1-for-3), Carlos Castillo (0-for-3), and Joshua Rodriguez (2-for-3), each had RBI’s in the teams win.

Leading 3-0 entering the sixth inning, the Lumberjacks busted the game open with a four run inning to increase their lead to seven runs. J Rodriguez highlighted the sixth inning with an RBI double.

The Lumberjacks offense continued leading the way in the second game of the doubleheader as the team took a 2-0 lead after four innings.

However after being held scoreless through the first 10 innings between the two games of the doubleheader, the Cannons offense came to life in the bottom of the fourth inning with a three run inning to take a 3-2 lead. Jack Connelly (0-for-3) and Brendan Roney (1-for-3) each had RBI’s that helped grab the Cannons first lead.

After surrendering the lead the Lumberjacks couldn’t get enough offense to bring in the tying or go-ahead runs.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Lumberjacks put the tying run on base, but Dalton Ross (S) secured his first save the of the season by striking out three and getting out of the potential Lumberjack rally.

Mason Millett making his first start of the season for the Lumberjacks pitched 3.1 scoreless innings where he gave up two hits, walked three, and struck out three.

Michael Piulats (2-for-3) led the Lumberjacks with a two-hit performance in game two along with the teams only RBI. Meanwhile, Baird (1-for-2), added to his league leading batting average as he extended it to . 396 on the season with one hit in two at bats along with one runs scored, and two walks.

The Lumberjacks were off on Wednesday and were on the road last night in Harrisonburg against the Turks. The team has a scheduled day off today, but will be back on the baseball diamond tomorrow when the team travels to Charlottesville to take on the TomSox. The Lumberjacks are 3-1 against the TomSox this season.
