Coming off a heartbreaking loss on Thursday in which the team needed to rally in the ninth inning to tie the game, the Covington Lumberjacks bats were awake all game long as the team snapped its six-game losing streak by defeating the Staunton Braves 14-4.
As the offense exploded with 14 runs scored, the team collected a season-high 17 hits. The teams previous high for hits was 16 which came during an 8-7 home loss on June 10th against the Harrisonburg Turks.
The Lumberjacks had five players with two or more hits.
Leading the way for the team was Michael Pavelchak (4-for-5), who led the team with a four-hit performance along with three runs scored. Cooper George (3-for-5) and Bradke Lohry (3-for-6), each had a three-hit game, while George led the team with two RBI’s.
While the offense scored a ton of runs and put a lot of hits on the stat sheet, the team only collected four RBI’s as the Braves committed five errors that resulted in six unearned runs.
Richard Long (1-0), picked up the win for the Lumberjacks as he allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out one in five innings pitched. Jack Carver (S, 1), picked up his first save of the season after working four relief innings where he gave up one run (unearned) on three hits, walked three, and struck out seven.
After allowing the games first run in the bottom of the first inning, the Lumberjacks caught a pair of breaks in the top of the second inning after a wild pitch and fielding error resulted in three runs to score which put the team in front 3-1.
Leading 6-3, the Lumberjacks added four runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh innings to take a 12-3 lead. In the sixth inning, Pavelchak, provided the team with an RBI single, while the Lumberjacks scored two of there other runs in the inning thanks in large part to two errors committed by the Braves defense. George and Nate Stocum (1-for-5), each had RBI’s in the seventh.
The 14 runs scored by the Lumberjacks were the most the team has scored so far this season. It was also the first time in 10 games that the team has scored 10 or more runs.
