On Saturday, June 4th the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism hosted its annual Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k. This year, over 330 runners from 18 different states registered to participate.
The Chamber would like to thank everyone who had a hand in making this event so successful. Sponsors of the event were as follows: Highlands Community Bank, WestRock, Ingevity, ALCOVA Mortgage, Cucci’s Pizzeria, Jackson River Community Credit Union, Jenfab/William’s Fabrication, LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany, Covington-Hot Springs Rotary, Sentara, Temple Baptist Church, J&K Electric, Greenbrier Physicians, B.A. Rupert Real Estate, and State Farm.
The Marathon also needed the assistance of nearly 25 local volunteers and the Chamber graciously thanks them for their help in making this event possible. “We received numerous positive comments regarding how friendly and welcoming each of the volunteers were,” shared Megan Persinger, Outdoor Events and Marketing Coordinator.
The Chamber would also like to thank the Alleghany County Parks and Recreation department for keeping the trail in impeccable shape. Many of the runners commented on the beauty of the trail as well as how well it is maintained. Finally, the Chamber would like to thank the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office and the Covington, Dunlap, and Falling Springs Fire and Rescue Squads for all of their assistance in ensuring the safety of the runners.
Next up for the Chamber is the Lake Moomaw One Mile Open Water Swim on Saturday, August 20th. This event takes place at Coles Point beach at Lake Moomaw and features an out-and-back swim race.
