The Region 2C varsity baseball tournament got underway for the Alleghany Mountaineers on Wednesday.
Backed by a complete game gem from Anthony Webb (W, 2-for-3) and an offensive surge in the fifth inning resulting in nine runs scored, the three seeded Mounties eliminated the six seeded Glenvar Highlanders 10-0 to advance to the Regional semifinals.
Webb, was sensational on the mound for the Mounties as he threw a five-inning complete game shutout where he gave up just two hits, one walk, and struck out three. Webb, was also part of the Mounties offensive surge as he had two hits and two RBI’s.
After dropping their final two regular season games in which they were held to just one run across both games, the Mounties bats awoke in a big way in their regional victory.
The Mounties offense finished with a dozen hits in the game, including four extra base hits. The team had four players with a multiple-hit day and three with a multiple-RBI performance.
From top to bottom it was a huge offensive day. Garrett Via (1-for-3), had a big two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning which jump started that teams nine-run fifth inning.
Andrew Middleton’s (2-for-3) RBI ended the game after the Mounties went up 10 runs after five innings played. Meanwhile, Webb, Eli Weese (2-for-3), Hunter DePriest (3-for-3), and Chris Harden (0-for-2), had each provided RBI’s in the teams nine-run fifth inning. DePriest led all batters with a game-high three hits, including two doubles.
The Highlanders were led by James Tozier (1-for-1) and Reed Hutchison (1-for-1), whom collected the teams lone pair of hits.
On the mound, Atlee Alexander (L), suffered the loss for the Highlanders as he gave up five runs (all earned), on eight hits, while walking two, and striking out three in four innings pitched. In relief of Alexander, Clay Caldwell did not record an out as he gave up five runs (all earned) on four hits, and walking one.
Outside of the nine-run fifth inning, Alexander, was having an impressive performance. Before entering the fifth inning, the Mounties only had four hits against Alexander. The lone run the Mounties grabbed off Alexander prior to the fifth inning came on a passed ball that scored Weese from third base.
One big impressive stat from the Mounties, in the teams nine-run fifth inning, the team scored all of their runs without an out recorded in the inning. In the fifth inning, the Mounties scored nine runs on eight hits, including three of the teams four extra base hits.
The win over the Highlanders was the teams third win against them. The Mounties had won both regular season meetings.
In the win the Mounties advance to the quarterfinals of the Region 2C tournament where they will play the two seeded James River Knights. The Mounties lost both regular season meetings with the Knights, losing 11-4 at home and 2-1 on the road.
