Final Rites For Old Ball Player
Funeral services for William J. (Chili) Reid, World War veteran and one-time popular ballplayer, were held Thursday afternoon from the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs. John O’Brien on Main Street. The Rev. Harry S. Coffee conducted the services and an interment was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. “Chili” was 49 years a native of Covington, where he spent his early life but since that time had possibly covered the entire glove in travel.

Fire Sweeps Timber In Rich Patch Area
Alleghany County’s worst forest fire so far this year destroyed an estimated 25 acres of pulpwood and saw timber largely on the property of Harry Wolfe on Route 18, Rich Patch Saturday afternoon. Three forest wardens, the district ranger, the area fire control officer, the Boiling Spring Fire Department, members of the KVG(Keep Virginia Clean) club and assorted volunteers battled the blaze four for hours before bringing it under control.

Downtown Clifton Forge Merchants Air Concerns
Downtown merchants in Clifton Forge are concerned about youth and young adults congregating on the streets and elderly residents are concerned about vandals in the residential area. Both groups plan to present their concerns to Council at the May 13 meeting which will be held at the Clifton Forge Fire House. An informational meeting held Tuesday night at the firehouse was attended by most of the merchants in the downtown area.
Night On Broadway
The Covington High School Choral Department will present its annual “Night on Broadway” Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Curfman Hall. This year’s production will include choral arrangements from “Phantom of the Opera”, “Secret Garden”, and “Les Miserables”. Solos will also be sung by senior members of the ensemble and will include songs from “Showboat”, “Annie”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Oliver”, “Fame”, and “Sunset Boulevard”. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of next year’s trip to New York.

Belchem Bringing 55 Jobs To Area
Belchem Corp., a publicly-traded company based in New Hampton, N.Y., announced today plans to establish an operation in Alleghany County investing nearly $10 million and creating 55 new jobs within two to three years. The company plans to purchase a 68,000 square-foot building currently owned by the county located in the Alleghany Regional Commerce Center at Low Moor. It is the former LKM building and is known locally as the Bacova II building.
