Pig Pens, Just Outside Town, Bad Nuisance
Mr. Charles Cambell of Covington addressed the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors this morning regarding the condition of hog pens on the edge of town which he said existed at the present time and were of a nuisance, to say the least, to the residents of that section of the town. Mr. Eldon Crowder, chairman of the board, said, “What we need in this section is a good hog lawyer. However,” said Mr. Crowder “most of the hogs in the county smell sweet.” “Yes,” one owner said, “but we people in the county let our hogs run out in the pasture, whereas these hogs, as I understand, are kept confined in a small pen.”

Marshall Move May Test Big Four For Policy Change
The Big Four Foreign Ministers agreed today at the demand of Secretary of State George C. Marshall to take up the problem of Austria’s frontiers tonight. This involved chiefly Yugoslavia’s demand for Southern Carinthia. Russia has favored and the Western powers have opposed this demand.

Astronauts Descending Toward Moon
Two Apollo 16 astronauts separated their lunar ship Orion from the command ship today and prepared to descend from orbit to explore where man has never been-a mountain region of the moon. John W. Young and Charles M. Duke Jr. cast off on their lunar adventure three hours after they donned their moon suits and climbed into Orion, the moon landing module, to thoroughly check communications, fuel, electrical and other systems.

First Responder Running ‘Very Successfully’
The First Responder Unit of the Sharon Fire Department, working in cooperation with the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad, has answered 30 calls in three months of existence and operated “very successfully,” according to Dale Muterspaugh, Sharon fire chief.

Wildfires Are 100 Percent Contained
The U.S. Forest Service this morning reported 100 percent containment of wildfires in the Highlands region. The fires broke out over Easter weekend and grew rapidly due to high winds and low humidity levels. In all, firefighters spent more than a week battling six wildfires throughout Virginia, with the largest being at Rich Hole in Alleghany County. The Forest Service estimates that the Rich Hole Fire damaged 15,454 acres.
Dick Clark, Tv And New Year’s Eve Icon, Dead At Age 82
Dick Clark stood as an avatar of rock ‘n’ roll virtually from its birth and, until his death Wednesday at age 82, as a cultural touchstone for boomers and their grandkids alike. He owned New Year’s Eve after four decades hosting his annual telecast on ABC from Times Square.
