It was a dramatic finish Tuesday evening for the Lady Mountaineers softball team (1-0) as they were down to there final out when, Kinsey Middleton (3-for-4), delivered the game-winning two-run base hit that lifted the Lady Mounties past the Riverheads Gladiators 10-9.
With the score tied 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning, Cheyenne Deming (2-for-3), crushed a line-drive over the left field fence for a go-ahead solo home run to give the Gladiators a 9-8 lead.
Kendell Keene (W), who was won the mound for the Lady Mounties, gave up a double following the C. Deming home run. Keene, would walk the next batter and then was able to get Sam Charles to ground into a double play. With a runner on third base and two outs, Keene, struck out Alexis Davis to end the side.
In a game which the Lady Mounties led most of the way, including leads of 6-2 and 8-5, the team found itself trailing for the first time since the first inning when the Gladiators took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first.
Down 9-8, Makenzie Kimberlin (2-for-4), led off the home half of the inning with a single. Kimberlin would be pitch ran by Bryce Leitch. With one out Daphne Shinault (2-for-4) hit a line-drive double to right field that advanced Leitch to third base. After Keene (2-for-4) struck out for the second out of the inning, it came down to Middleton. With two outs and runners in scoring position on second and third base, Middleton, starring at a 1-2 count, ripped the game winner into the centerfield as Leitch scored the tying run and Shinault scored the winning run.
The Lady Mounties collected 15 hits in the game as a team and had six players with two or more hits. Emalee Phillips (2-for-4), put together a two-hit performance, including two RBI’s and a solo home run. It was the Lady Mounties only home run in the game.
Averi Phillips, picked up the start in the teams season opener, pitching in 3.1 innings, while giving up five runs (all earned) on four hits and walking three batters. Keene, the winning pitcher, came in relief of Phillips in the fourth inning and pitched 3.2 innings of relief work while surrendering four runs (all earned), while striking out two batters and walking two.
The Gladiators finished with four players recording two or more hits. Charles and C. Deming, each had three RBI’s.
The Lady Mounties are back on the diamond today as the team hosts the Wilson Memorial Hornets at 5:30 p.m.
