A balanced offensive attack set the tone for the Covington Cougars (6-11) girls basketball teams 48-15 victory over the Bath County Chargers (0-17) on Wednesday evening.

The Cougars finished the game with three players in double figures scoring. Leading the way was, Lauren Bragg, who recorded double-double. Bragg, finished with game-highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bragg, also had a team-high eight rebounds and three steals.

Meanwhile, Kayla Bartley, was second in scoring in the game with 13 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars. Cristi Persinger, added 12 points, all coming off of four made three-pointers. Persinger, also finished the game with a team-high five assists.

The Chargers struggled with shooting the basketball as the team only made seven of their 38 field goal attempts.

Hannah Armstrong, scored a team-high seven points for the Chargers, while Demi Legg and Laken Tingler, each scored four points. Tingler, recorded a team-high nine rebounds.

The start of the game looked promising for the winless Chargers as the team led 4-1 early in the first quarter. The Cougars would closeout the first quarter on a 12-2 scoring run to take a 13-6 lead going into the second quarter. Bartley and Persinger, each knocked down a three-pointer in the first quarter that helped the Cougars gain control of the game.

Raven Heighter, opened the second quarter by scoring on back to back layups which increased the Cougars lead to double digits at 17-6.

After Armstrong knocked down the Chargers lone three-pointer to cut the lead back down to single digits at 17-9, the Cougars would seize full control of the game with a balanced offense as the team grabbed five different scorers in the second quarter to build up to a 31-11 lead by the end of the first half. The Cougars ended the second quarter on a 14-2 scoring run.

In the third quarter, the Cougars continued their dominance by outscoring the Chargers 17-2 to take a 48-13 lead. The quarter was highlighted by L. Bragg (8 points) and Persinger (6 points), who combined to score 14 of the teams 17 points in the quarter.

Both teams would combine for two total points in the fourth quarter as Armstrong was the lone scorer in the quarter as the Cougars were held scoreless.

Despite the victory for the Cougars, the team only made seven of their 21 free-throw attempts, while the Chargers did not attempt any. The Cougars however, did shoot 41% for the game.

Next up for the Cougars, the team looked to build on their two-game winning streak last night as the team was on the road at Narrows. The Chargers were also on the road last night at Parry McCluer.
