Friendly Wage Cut
The Railroad Unions, like most of the building trade unions and many other groups, have made the best of a sad situation by taking a wage cut. The acceptance of a 10 percent reduction by nearly 2,000,000 employees will lighten the railroads’ burden considerably.

School Board Presents $746,186 Budget
The largest school budget in the history of Alleghany County was presented to the Board of Supervisors today by the school board. The total amount of all items contained in the budget is $745,186.89. This amount represents an increase of $271,377.52 over the 1946-47 budget.
Industrial Rayon Makes $10,000 Donation to Hospital fund
T. Carson Penn. personal manager of the Covington Plant of Industrial Rayon and plant manager Lester R. carrier presented Miss Betty Lawrence, office secretary of the hospital fund headquarters a check for $10,000.

President Nixon’s re-election campaign is being geared up with GOP spokesmen in California and New Hampshire calling the Democratic field a group of “flip-flop critics” who have been on all sides of almost every issue.
Hemp Achieves Dean’s list at Madison College
Houston D. Hemp, son of Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Hemp of 1234 Crawford Ave. has been named to the Dean’s list at Madison College.

Stop-In Coming Down
Employees of excavator C.C. Coffey of Selma were busy tearing down the Stop-In building on Durant Road today. Workers began stripping down the building on Monday and began exterior demolition this morning. A new Stop-In building will be built on the same site.
Allen Canterbury, a 1992 graduate of Alleghany High School, has been placed on the Dean’s list from the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech for the fall 1996 semester.

Queen Celebrates 60 Years
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth ll, waves to well-wishers during a visit to Kings Lynn Town Hall in eastern England Monday. It has been 60 years to the day since Britain was shocked by the bulletins: “The King is Dead; Long Live The Queen!” Princess Elizabeth became the queen the moment her 56-year-old father, King George Vl, died of a fatal blood clot.
