In response to requests for more testing in rural areas, RCAHD has worked with community partners to create a testing event Wednesday, Jan 19 for Alleghany Highlands residents on-site at Dabney Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge from 1:00- 1:30 pm.
Case numbers are at all-time local highs for the third week. Please note that hospitalization numbers (while incomplete due to the holiday) remain high, but overall are not significantly different than last week.
Cumulative Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts: 51,383 (up 4,454)
Alleghany Health District: 33,631 total
Roanoke City Health District: 17,752 total
Approximately 18% of new cases are in children
Approximately 50% of new cases are in persons younger than 35 years of age
The vast majority of new cases and hospitalizations continue to occur in individuals who are not fully vaccinated.
For the week ending in 1/8/2022, which is representative of current vaccination rates and transmission of Omicron, people in Virginia who were not vaccinated developed COVID-19 at almost 60 times the rate as people who were fully vaccinated and were hospitalized at a rate more than 35 times that of fully vaccinated people.
