Down as much as 17 points in the first half, the Alleghany Mountaineers (7-1) girls basketball team fought back to rally past the Staunton Storm (3-4) on Tuesday evening.
The Mountaineers needed all 32 minutes of hard fought basketball to “storm” back with a 58-50 victory over the Storm.
After only putting up two points in the first quarter and being down double digits, the Mountaineers, refused to put their heads down.
In the second quarter, the Mountaineers began chipping away at that deficit and were able to go into the second down only single digits.
By the end of the third quarter, the Mountaineers, were only down five points, thanks to nearly doubling their first half points total with a 17-point third quarter.
Kendell Keene and Erin Harden, helped guide the comeback in the fourth quarter as the Mountaineers dropped in 22 points while holding the Storm to just nine points.
A 17-point deficit is hard to comeback from for anyone, but the key for the Mountaineers, was there was plenty of time left in the game where they could rebound and chip away. The Mountaineers didn’t do it all in one quarter, but did so through the final two and a half quarters.
Keene, finished with team-high 20 points. Harden added in another 17 points.
For the Storm, their fourth loss of the season, was the toughest.
In the loss, Emma Witt, had a game-high 22 points.
Not to be overlooked, the win for the Mountaineers, was the teams sixth in a row.
The Mountaineers were back on the court last night as they hosted the Covington Cougars. You can read all about that game in Tuesday’s edition as there will be no newspaper on Saturday.
