The Alleghany Mountaineers varsity boys basketball team kicked off their season on Friday night at home in front of a boisterous crowd that was behind their team from the tip-off until the final whistle.
With the crowd behind them all game long, the Mountaineers pulled off a season opening victory over the Stuarts Draft Cougars by the final score 48-34.
The Mountaineers had an eight point lead after the first quarter at 10-2.
In the second quarter, the Cougars went on an 8-1 scoring run to open the quarter to get within one point (11-10).
The Mountaineers used a 12-3 scoring run to end the first half and regained their eight point lead. The 12-3 scoring run was highlighted by back to back three point made field goals by Halen Lowman and Kole Caldwell.
In the third quarter, the Mountaineers grabbed their highest scoring quarter with 16 points while increasing their lead to 17 points by the quarters end.
With a 30-22 lead, the Mountaineers ended the third quarter on a 9-0 scoring run. With 2:27 left in the quarter, the scoring run was started by a three-point play from Davien Moore. Moore was fouled while making a layup. Moore finished the three-point play by making the free throw.
With under four minutes left in game, the Mountaineers further increased their lead to 18 points (43-25) when Baron Leitch converted the Mountaineers second three-point play of the half after he was fouled while making a layup.
The Mountaineers led the game by as much as 19 points.
The Mountaineers outrebounded the Cougars 27-20, while both teams each had seven offensive rebounds.
Dylan Gibson led the Mountaineers in scoring with 10 points. Six of those points came in the second half. Gibson also had three rebounds and one assist.
Lowman had an all-around performance with five points, a team-high six rebounds, team-high four assists, two steals, and tied for a game-high two blocks.
Blake Stinespring, led the Cougars with 11 points, six rebounds, and was tied with Lowman for a game-high two blocks. Isaac Wood, chipped in with nine points and three rebounds.
