The Alleghany Mountaineers had a tall task on Saturday when they went up against 16 schools, including the likes of Christiansburg, Lord Botetourt, William Byrd, and Northside at the Alleghany Invitational.
A total of 11 of the 16 schools were 3A or larger.
The Mountaineers hung with the bigger schools as the boys cross country team finished fifth, while the girls finished in sixth place.
“I was expecting us to finish in the sixth to seventh range. We were one of the small schools at our event. It’s grown every year and is attracting more and more competition because it’s a good venue and our course is fast. To finish fifth and sixth (for the boys and girls), I’m very proud”, said Alleghany Head Coach Jeremy Bartley on his teams performance from the Alleghany Invitational.
Coach Bartley added “We had several personal bests on the varsity boys team (Baron Leitch, Rilee Webb, Andrew Middleton, and Kellen Lowman), lots of season best, several girls ran personal best (Cassy Evans, Sadie Moye, and Nevaeh Wills), and almost our entire middle school team ran personal bests. Our training is fantastic.”
Senior Gabe Miller finished 12th overall individually in the boys 5000. Miller finished the face at 17:16.42
Freshman Wills finished 15th for the girls at 20:44.63
“Nevaeh has incredible potential. We are sharing her time with cheerleading. She is running with part time training”, said Coach Bartley on Wills performance as a freshman and pulling double the workload with also being on the cheerleading team.
We will have the full results (team and individual) in Thursday’s edition.
