We’re already entering the fifth week of high school football.
For some schools, they haven’t even had two games, while some have played all four weeks.
It’s been a wild fall 2021 high school football season thus far.
Last Friday, for the second week in a row, we had an exciting finish at Boodie Albert Stadium.
Unfortunately, the home fans of the Covington Cougars didn’t leave the stadium with excitement of a victory like they did the week prior when the team beat the Alleghany Mountaineers in the Brackman Cup.
The Cougars lost a tightly contested game against the James River Knights 34-32.
The Cougars trailed in the fourth quarter 27-18 and climbed all the way back to be within two points. The offense had a chance with under a minute left in the game for a game-winning drive, but quarterback Javier Yancey threw an interception that sealed the win for the Knights. Yancey did finish with 205 passing yards and three touchdowns.
The Cougars rival, Mountaineers had traveled to Roanoke and were routed in a run away victory for the Cave Spring Knights by the final score of 48-8.
The lone touchdown for the Mountaineers came in the fourth quarter on a kickoff returned of nearly 80 yards by Garrett Via.
Kole Caldwell and Lucas Rogers connected on a successful two-point conversion that cut the Knights lead at 48-8.
As we entered the fifth week of the season, it looked as if we were going to get three local games for the first time this season.
However, as of today there is only one game currently scheduled for the area Friday night, the Bath County Chargers hosting the Buffalo Gap Bison.
Buffalo Gap At Bath County
It’s been a while since the Charger have hit the football field for any in-game action.
The Chargers have not played since the first week of the season when the team lost 22-0 to rival Covington.
The team had its week two game at their other rival Alleghany be postponed with little possibility of being rescheduled.
That changed on Monday when it was announced that the two schools came together and were able to reschedule the game for Tuesday, November 2.
In the seasons third week, the Chargers had their home game against Mountain View-Quicksburg be moved to Mountain View and then ultimately was postponed.
That game is not going to be rescheduled as Mountain View has canceled the rest of its season.
In week four, the Chargers had their bye week which would of been a good time for a makeup game, but the Mountaineers already had a game scheduled for the week.
But finally after four weeks, the Chargers are back on the field tomorrow with the Buffalo Gap Bison.
The Bison will enter the game with a 3-1 record.
Last week the Bison won a closely contested home game over East Rockingham 28-27.
The Bison are riding a two game winning streak with wins over East Rock and Jackson.
The Chargers who did not score in their only game so far this season will need to get on the board fast to stay with the Bison as the team only is giving up 15 points per game.
The defense of the Chargers shut out the Cougars in the first half of the teams season opener before giving up 22 second half points.
The teams defense will need to slow down the Bison on offense like they did the Cougars during that first half. The Bison are averaging 26 points a game.
Covington-James Monroe (W.Va.) & Alleghany-Staunton River Postponed
The Cougars and Mountaineers each had their Friday night homes get postponed.
For the Mountaineers, their rescheduled game with Staunton River will take place this coming Tuesday, September 28th at 7:00 p.m.
The Cougars and James Monroe game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00 p.m.
