The Alleghany Mountaineers were looking to put their heartbreaking overtime loss to the Covington Cougars in the Brackman Cup behind them as they traveled to Roanoke last Friday to take on the Cave Spring Knights.
The Knights though went on to run away with this game by the final score of 48-8.
It was the Knights first win of the season after starting off the year 0-3. The win was also the first in first year head coach Nick Leftwich who took over for Tim Fulton after his 17 seasons as head coach.
After the Knight and Mountaineers were unsuccessful on their first drive of the game, the Knights got on the scoreboard on their second drive in the first quarter with a rushing touchdown from senior fullback Jesse Monsour. A made extra point gave the Knights a 7-0 lead.
The touchdown was set up by sophomore Camerohn Parker who had a 50 yard rush.
On the next drive for the Knights, Parker made sure this time around he would not be stopped on his way to the endzone as he rushed for a 65 yard score after avoiding being tackled by seven Mountaineer defenders.
Already up big, the Knights were looking for more in the second quarter, on fourth down in Mountaineers territory, senior quarterback, Skylor Griffiths connected with sophomore Owen Sweeney for the score.
By halftime, the Knights led the Mountaineers 34-0.
The lone score for the Mountaineers came in the fourth quarter, with the team trailing 48-0, junior Garrett Via had a kickoff return of nearly 80 yards for the score.
The Mountaineers went for a two-point try and were successful as sophomore quarterback Kole Caldwell connected with senior Lucas Rogers for the score which cut the lead to 48-8.
Caldwell finished the game 3-for-9 for 20 yards passing along with an interception.
Via led the team in tackles with seven while Dalton Griffith chipped in with six.
The Mountaineers committed three turnovers in the loss.
Up next for the Mountaineers is a home meeting with the Staunton River Golden Eagles (2-1) who are coming off of a 46-8 victory over Tunstall on Friday.
