The return of Fall Friday night football in the Alleghany Highlands was a success for the Alleghany Mountaineers who ran away with a 43-6 victory over Roanoke Catholic and for the Covington Cougars who shutout rival Bath County 22-0.
The energy wasn’t just there from the players, but the fans as well.
I was in attendance for the Cougars and Chargers game and the crowd from both sides were very much into the game.
It was just nice to see fans back in the bleachers again.
From the football game itself, to the two schools bands performing at halftime, the crowds energy was there.
A crowd is so important to teams.
It’s having an extra hand on the field to get that extra boost from and the players feed off of that energy.
You could see that from both sides and also at the Mountaineers game.
This week, I’m sure we can expect just as much live energy from the fans, if not more.
Covington At Staunton (Friday, September 3)
Coming off of a 22-0 victory over rival Bath County, the Covington Cougars are riding with momentum on their side before their first road game of the season Friday night at Staunton High School against the Storm.
In the teams 22-0 victory, Purcel Turner rushed for over 70 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns.
The other Cougars touchdown came on a quarterback keeper from Javier Yancey who punched it in the endzone from one yard out.
Staunton did not play last week due to the teams program having positive cases of COVID-19.
The team had paused practices on August 20th and had to postpone their season opener against Wilson Memorial.
The last time these two schools met was in 2019.
The Storm won 20-7.
At the time it was Storm’s head coach, Jake Phillips first year with the program, but was familiar with Covington and the Cougars head coach, Chris Jones.
Coach Jones, coached Phillips in 2001 at Bath County, the year he coached them to a state championship.
The Cougars had led 7-0 at halftime of their last meeting before the Cougars could not weather the Storm (pun intended) and surrendered 20 unanswered points.
Covington looks to keep their momentum going from their season opening victory into Staunton Friday night.
Bath County At Alleghany (Postponed)
Friday night was supposed to be Alleghany Mountaineers head coach, Will Fields first head coaching game against the school he previously last was a head coach at.
That will now have to wait.
The game is postponed as of yesterday afternoon.
The Mountaineers are coming off of a victory in which they wiped out Roanoke Catholic 43-6.
Garrett Via had 91 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the teams win last Friday night.
