August 8, 1931: VA. Vets Not To Hear Roosevelt
R.A. Ward, commander of the Clifton Forge post of the American Legion, announced today that previous engagements would preclude the attendance of Governor Roosevelt at the Virginia Department of the American Legion to be held at Clifton Forge, August 23 to 26.
Legion authorities invited the New York governor to address the convention during its sessions, and it was at first thought he would accept. It has been definitely learned, however, that he will be unable to attend.
Commander Ware, who is chairman of the distinguished guests committee for the convention, took occasion to correct the statement that he was a personal friend of Governor Roosevelt. He said that while a resident in New York he had been slightly acquainted with the governor, but that he did not consider himself as his personal friend.
Preparations are going forward for the convention under the direction of the various committees of the Clifton Forge post in conjunction with state officers and other designated officials.
