LOW MOOR — Michael May has completed an internship and is now the health and wellness program coordinator and a personal trainer at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA.

May is a 2009 graduate of Alleghany High School with a background in the culinary arts. He recently opted for a career change and has since received his certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, allowing him to become a certified personal trainer.

Under May’s guidance, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA is now offering a discount on personal training without being a member of the YMCA. However, if anyone signs up for a new membership, they will get a discount on personal training. For more information on this program, call May at (540) 862-8678 or drop him an email at mmayahymca@gmail.com.

“I am extremely excited about this new programming option,” May said. “I look forward to working with folks from all walks of life and of all ages who are interested in developing and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.”

May is an example of how a change in lifestyle can be beneficial to one’s health. Over the last four years, he has dropped about 60 pounds from a 230-pound frame, spending much of his free time strength training in the gym. He will set up an initial appointment to meet and help anyone on their goal to better health.

“We are excited and very fortunate to have Michael on our staff,” said Alleghany Highlands YMCA CEO Jennifer Unroe. “His expertise in personal training and developing an individualized program for each of his clients is a part of our overall goal to improve the health and well-being of residents throughout the Highlands.”

Programs will be available for those ages 16 to 65 and over. Parent or guardian permission will be required for students. To learn more, call the Alleghany Highlands YMCA at (540) 962-9622 or stop by the YMCA, located at 101 YMCA Way, Covington.
