The Covington, Clifton Forge, and Alleghany County governing bodies asked WestRock to join them again this year in the fight to reduce the overpopulation of dogs and cats in the area. As a result, WestRock is providing grant funding in 2021 to decrease spay/neuter costs through the Mountain View Humane mobile clinic and the Angels of Assisi transport program.
The program is administered by the Alleghany Humane Society, which graciously agreed to administer this program once again for the localities. The discount on spay/neuter costs will last until the grant funding is exhausted. This funding is only available to residents of Alleghany County, Covington and Clifton Forge. Last year, the Alleghany Humane Society was able to facilitate over 500 spay/neuter surgeries.
With the grant, the cost of a spay/neuter for cats is $20. The cost of a neuter for male dogs is $35 and a spay for female dogs is $37. These rates include surgery, pain medication, and a rabies vaccine if needed. You must sign up and pay in advance at the Alleghany Humane Society to reserve a spot for the transport or mobile clinic.
Proof of rabies vaccination will be required when you sign up your pet. If your pet does not have a current rabies vaccination, it will be done during the procedure. This is not optional. Services such as microchipping, other vaccines, etc. are offered at an additional charge.
The mobile clinics perform surgeries on-site at the Alleghany Humane Society. Angels of Assisi transports the animals to Roanoke for surgery.
For more information, or to check on dates for the mobile clinics, call the Humane Society at 540-862-2436. You will need to schedule an appointment to fill out the paperwork in advance and pre-pay.
Due to Covid-19, all shelter business is currently conducted by appointment only.
