Dear Editor,
Each March during National Professional Social Work Month, we recognize the dedication of more than 640,000 social workers who are involved in our communities.
Whether in schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, or nursing homes, social workers work tirelessly to serve individuals and families in need.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many people choose a career in social work because they have “… a strong desire to help improve people’s lives.” That’s exactly what drives the social services team at Golden Living Center-Alleghany.
Social services professionals wear many different hats at our center. They are pillars of support and vocal advocates for our patients and families, but they also play a key role on the clinical team.
Regular meetings with physicians, therapists, and nurses, help our social workers stay informed about our patients’ physical health and the effects medical conditions may have on emotional health.
The social services team at Golden Living Center-Alleghany often gets to know patients families even before a patient’s care begins at the Living Center.
For example, a social worker may meet with patients and their families to discuss care options and will work with hospitals to ensure smooth transitions in care settings.
The relationship grows over time, as patients and their families regularly meet with social workers during their stay to discuss goals, address any concerns, and simply spend together.
A social worker also may help arrange services – from physical therapy follow-up to help with grocery shopping – for patients preparing to return to their home environments.
Social Work Month is a great opportunity for all of us to consider the vital role that social workers have in Golden Living Center-Alleghany and in the greater community, and to thank all social services workers for the care they provide.
Golden Living Center-Alleghany provides quality health care for up to 105 patients and residents including those needing skilled nursing and rehabilitative care. The facility has been part of the Clifton Forge community since 1976.
