The Alleghany High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted their Class of 2014 prior to Friday night’s football game against Covington at Mountaineer Field.
Jeremy Bartley, Montell Watson, Tina Moore Van Buren and Bobby Gillespie joined 52 others in the hall.
Jeremy Bartley
Bartley lettered 10 times in three sports while at AHS.
In wrestling, he finished third in both the Blue Ridge District and in Region III in 1994 and second in both events in 1995.
In cross country, Bartley was third in the BRD and fifth in Region III in 1995.
On the track, Jeremy was second in the BRD and sixth in Region III in the 3,200 meters in 1995, while placing fourth in the BRD in the 1,600.
In 1996, he won the BRD, finished fourth in Region III and eighth in the state in the 3,200 meters, while placing third in the BRD and sixth in Region III in the 1,600.
Bartley attended Concord University where he was a three-time West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champion in the 800 and 1,600 meters.
Montell Watson
Watson was a basketball standout at Alleghany, scoring a school-record 2,083 career points and earning a grant-in-aid to Elon University where he played for four seasons.
He averaged 10.4 points per game in his senior season at Elon and earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the Southern Conference Tournament.
At Alleghany, Montell earned numerous honors.
He was named All-BRD and All-Region III after his sophomore year and All-BRD, All-Region III and All-State after both his junior and senior seasons.
Watson was also selected as the BRD and Region III Player of the Year as both a junior and senior and participated in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game after his senior season.
Tina Moore Van Buren
Van Buren lettered four years in track and three in both basketball and volleyball at Alleghany.
She received a grant-in-aid to Liberty University where she was on the track team for four seasons.
As a Mountaineer, Tina finished fifth in the discus at the Region III meet in 1988.
A year later, she won the BRD in the discus and finished second in the shot put, while placing fifth in the discus at the Group AA state meet.
Van Buren is still the school record holder in the discus.
Bobby Gillespie
Gillespie lettered three years in both football and baseball and four years in wrestling at Alleghany.
On the wrestling mat, Bobby won the Blue Ridge District and finished second in Region III in 1989, before winning the BRD and Region III titles and finishing as the state runner-up in 1990.
